iOS 15 was reveled at WWDC keynote 2021 and would be available publicly later this year with the upcoming iPhone 13 series devices.
Users can currently test the new update to iOS installing a developer beta but we do not recommend doing that. These developer betas are buggy and meant to be installed on secondary devices by developers to test their apps on the system that would come out later in the year.
Create a backup of your supported iPhone and/or iPad on your PC or Mac in case you decide to downgrade back to a stable version. (Note the developer betas can be extremely buggy and we recommend having a backup before moving to next step.)
We expected iPadOS 15 to support Mac as now the iPad Pro uses the same chip as Apple’s Desktop computers. At WWDC when iPadOS was announced we were disappointed as the support for Mac apps was not announced but it is still a pretty solid update.
iPadOS 15 makes the iPad much more intuitive to use, with better multitasking, a new home screen, redesigned Safari, Quick Note, SharePlay, and More.
The iPad is now even more like a Computer with even more features and keyboard shortcuts. Here is everything that was announced for the iPad.
Multitasking and new Keyboard Shortcuts
Apple has a new multitasking menu at top of the apps, this menu will show options for various styles of multitasking including Split View and Slide Over. After selecting an option users will be given quick access to the home screen while the open app will slide to one side and users can select what other app they want to use.
A new shelf also allows users to multitask within different windows of the same app, for supported apps like Safari and Mail.
When using an external keyboard the entire experience is again elevated by new keyboard shortcuts for various multitasking modes and tasks.
Widgets
Widgets on iPad can now be placed anywhere on the home screen and Apple has also introduced a new larger Widget size specifically for the large iPad display. These give a pinch of added personalization to the Home Screen.
App Library
The iPadOS 15 also comes with a library that automatically organizes all your apps into categories such as Productivity, Games, Finance, recently added, etc.
The iPad App Library can be accessed using the App Library icon present in the dock.
Quick Note
iPadOS 15 allows users to take down notes faster than ever. A swipe in from the corner to bring in a quick note overlay where you can take down your notes. This quick note can be accessed system-wide over any app for instant note-taking.
Notes also has new ways to organize notes using hashtags. better collaboration using mentions where you can mention anyone collaborating on the note to give them a Ping and notify them about them being mentioned.
FaceTime and SharePlay
Similar to iOS 15, iPadOS 15 brings new features to FaceTime which make the experience a lot better. Spatial Audio, background noise cancellation, grid mode, and more. Read more about the new FaceTime features here.
Safari
Apple has a new Safari UI for iPadOS 15, with tabs at the extreme top and address bar present right in the open tab. New Safari looks sleek and beautiful. A new Tab Groups feature lets users create various groups of tabs that can be synced across their iCloud devices. Safari now also supports extensions that are available on the App Store.
Focus
Focus is Apple’s configurable do not disturb filter, it can filer out and show you only the notifications that are related to what you are doing at the moment.
For example, when you are at work Focus will only show you notifications related to your work, and messages from your colleagues. Focus uses on-device intelligence to filter out the right notifications and suggest you people and apps to follow at the moment.
Live Text, memories, and photos.
Apple has been working on its on-device AI for a long time now and now your idevice can read text from a photo naturally and you can even copy text from a photo. You can click on a phone number on a photo to directly call the number. Click on a website link to open the page in Safari and more.
The Memories section on the photos app also gets a major upgrade. Your iPad can now create beautiful memories with just the right song from Apple Music subscription service. Your photos and videos are automatically synced with the beats of the song.
Spotlight can now search in photos as well as use live text to search text in photos.
Swift Playground
The biggest update in the iPadOS 15 from a developer point of view is that you can now develop iOS and iPadOS apps right in the Swift Playground app and directly submit your app to the App Store, while coding you can see a live preview of the app, and users can also run their apps full screen to test them.
Universal Control
Universal control is a great feature that lets you use a single mouse and keyboard across your iPad and Mac with absolutely no setup required. It also allows users to drag and drop files from one device to another.
Apple announced the next generation of its flagship iOS operating system at WWDC 2021. The iOS 15 upgrade brings some powerful new features that elevate the experience of being connected. iOS 15 includes updates to FaceTime, new Focus features, updates to the Wallet, Weather, and Maps app, and a major update to iMessage and a lot better on-device intelligence. The new update though did not a UI revamp like a lot of people were expecting.
FaceTime and SharePlay
FaceTime Apple’s video calling/conferencing app got some major updates. FaceTime now supports Spatial Audio making you sound more natural and dynamic. The video calling app also adds new modes that let users separate their voices from the background, allowing the conversation to be a lot more clear and noise-free. iOS 15 also adds a new portrait mode to FaceTime which blurs the background and brings focus on the person.
SharePlay allows users to share experiences in real-time with those who matter. Users can now live share music from the Apple Music app, watch movies and tv on the Apple TV+ app, or sharing your phone screen to share from other apps and websites, all in real-time sync so you can enjoy the content together. Apple also released a SharePlay API allowing third-party apps to be used with FaceTime.
Apple also now allows iPhone users to FaceTime their friends, family, and colleagues who use Android and Windows Devices using their web browser. (Note android and windows devices can not start a FaceTime call, they can only join one using the link shared to them)
New Notifications
Notifications on iOS have been a bit messed up earlier but Apple now claims to have made it a lot better.iOS 15 brings new redesigned notifications which now will have contact photos for people and larger icons for app notifications.
Using on-device intelligence in iOS 15 notifications are arranged based on priority with messages from people notified at the top, and notifications that aren’t as important being added to a notification summary that can be read when you are free. These notifications are based on how and how much users react to an app.
A redesigned Safari experience
Safari now gets a one-hand usage-friendly UI that brings all the controls and also the Address bar at the bottom of the screen. This new bottom tab bar floats over the bottom when required and hides into a compact UI when not. Users can now swipe on the tabs bar towards left or right to go to the next or last tab. While on the latest tab swiping towards the left will open a new tab. The start page also is now customizable and users can save Tab groups which can be accessed through all their devices.
Focus
iOS 15 brings a new system-wide filter that Apple calls Focus. Focus allows users to focus on notifications and apps based on what the user is doing. This feature works through iCloud on every Apple device. This feature uses on-device intelligence to allow notifications only from people and apps that are important at the moment.
Maps, Wallet, and Weather
Apple Maps in iOS 15 contains a significant amount of detail about cities, lanes, and over and under ways which can now be viewed in 3D with a beautifully designed 3D world. The Navigation UI shows a 3D view of the surroundings giving a better understanding of turn lanes, medians, bike lanes, crosswalks, etc.
Apple Wallet adds support for New Keys for a lot of third-party companies like Walt Disney World, Hayaat Hotels, etc along with car keys which were added last year. The wallet app can now also legally hold your IDs like Driver’s Licence in the participating US States.
The iOS 15 Weather app also gets a major UI revamp with new background animations and a lot more weather data that can be easily accessed and viewed in the Weather app.
On Device Intelligence, Live Text, Offline Siri, improved spotlight, and more.
Apple has always been promoting on-device intelligence unlike Google and others who keep pushing cloud-based processing.
This genius iOS 15 allows the photos app to treat text in photos like traditional text, allowing users to directly select and copy text from photos. Users can also lookup about things in their surroundings using just the camera app and the crazy Apple Neural Engine.
Spotlight Now uses intelligence to search photos by location, people, scenes, or objects. Spotlight can also find text in photos and videos using Live Text. Spotlight search now also can search images on the web, and all-new rich results for actors, musicians, TV shows, movies, and music. Contacts in spotlight also get results from recent conversations, shared media, and location if they have shared it using Find My.
The photos app now integrates with the Apple Music service to create beautiful memories with perfect music from apple music, the on-device intelligence adjusts the pace of the memories to match the beats in the playing music.

Making MacOS work even more effectively and efficiently on Apple’s custom M-series chips (and between all devices) will be the focus of this year’s release. You will also see improved support for iOS apps, but the highlight will be creative and professional apps, testimonies from key developers, and perhaps some more surprises.
WatchOS 8
New watch faces and additional complications seem inevitable. The update would mainly focus on bringing in more health features to WatchOS and better integration with Fitness+.
We may also be told about swim tracking in the Fitness app. We’ll almost learn more concerning recent studies regarding the watch and heart health and COVID.
tvOS 15
The tvOS 15 operating system is expected to come with a design refresh, a fresh new mode for children with advanced content that Apple will add to the Apple TV+ subscription service. The AppStore will also undergo change and will offer a more convenient interface than what exists today.
